I used to love going to shops with all sorts of odds and ends. I especially liked military surplus stores and antique stores because it was like a search for treasure. My mom knew that if she wanted to keep us occupied for a while she could take us to one of these stores. Most of the time we wouldn’t be able to buy anything, but it was still fun to look. Sometimes we could buy a patch or a sticker or a shirt, depending on whether we had any allowance saved up for things like this. It was also fun just to imagine what different things were used for.
