Named after the great physicist Galileo Galilei, Galileo thermometers comprise of a sealed vertical glass tube which is filled with clear water that contains a number of calibrated glass spheres. The glass spheres have a metal tag attached to them that indicates the temperature. Inside the glass spheres, there exists colored water that leads to expansion and/or contraction with every change in the temperature outside the tube.

This expansion or contraction results in a change in the density of the spheres. As a result of which some spheres sink whilst some others float. The sphere that sinks the most indicates the temperature of the room.

These thermometers, though they represent almost accurate temperature, are mainly used for decoration today; the bright colors that are mixed with the water inside the bubbles make the thermometer look elegant.
