80′s Rock Bands and Layer Guitar Work
Arts March 24th. 2009, 5:03amThe 80’s era of rock and hard rock music employed a much different philosophy of guitar sound as opposed to today’s crop of ax driven albums. Much of that 80’s sound was derived from the layer of guitar tracks, not so much for sonic punch, but more for the harmonizing effect that it had on the melody.
Listen to many of the pop songs from 80′s rock bands and you may not notice this feature on your fist take, but continue to listen and you will hear the expansive chord phrasings. They would take a guitar chord progression and layer it using two or more chords at differing octaves and at harmonic intervals to produce this big effect, or wall of sound that painted their melodic picture.
